OCR: INSIGHT SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT *(tm) From: Subject : Greg Epley Feedback Support and Questionaire Date: 05/27/87 Communication requires two entities: a sender, and receiver. If either of these is missing, the process of communication cannot take place. Practically everything in life requires some communication, especially any service which deals with the public, and that pretty much covers any business. I realize that companies appear and disappear every day, especially in the computer industry. However, I believe that we all deserve the chance to try to make something of ourselves, and if that means making a little money in the process, while providing a product to the public, then so be it. I decided that the best way to introduce our software was to distribute it as public domain "shareware" to let the public see the quality of our software. I felt I made myself clear on the subject of feedback in the documentation for our software. Apparently, this was not the case. I am more concerned with hearing from you, the user, than I am with receiving money, which doesn't mean that I won't accept donations. Rather, I feel that the opinion of the users is more important. Without your help, I have no idea as to how many people have used our software, or how widespread it's distribution, or what you like or dislike about it. Since the release of our first program, "Sizzlers", over 8 months ago, I have only received two responses and donations. It concerns me that the users in care no more for the software they use than to get something for nothing. I work an average of 8 hours or more per day, day in, day out, trying out different color schemes, recoding for better efficiency, rewritting documentation, etc ., and I feel I deserve something from you, the user, when I release a product. Over the past several months, I have noted several letters in computer magazines that puzzled me. Users complaining about the quality of software and documentation. Why? Obviously you must think it's not that bad or you would make some attempt to let developers like myself know the strengths and weaknesses of our software. Remember what I said about communication? We, the software developers and companies, release products that we have worked on very hard, the users, gripe about the quality, gripe about the price, gripe about the and you, documentation, to everybody else but us, the developers and companies that release the products. You indirectly communicate with us. You take your concerns to the magazines and users' groups. Well, I am trying to change this, but I can't do it without your help. I think the quality of our public domain software is far better than most. The price is right (free in most cases), and I try very hard to make sure the documentation is easy to understand and is free of typos. It may be several more years or just a few months till we release our first commercial never happen without feedback from you. product, but it will When we do release, we will make every effort to keep the prices low and the quality high. I had hoped I would be able to avoid writing this altogether, but I am beginning to wonder if anyone "gives a damn" anymore (excuse the language, but that's how I my feelings feel). As a last resort, I have written this, on why you should support Insight Software Development, and have also written up a short questionaire. Please take a few minutes to fill it out and send it back (the questionaire appears as a seperate file named 'qst' so you can print out several copies - read 'docfiles.readme' to find out how to print out our files). It won't cost you but 22 cents (maybe 25 by the time you read this), a couple minutes of your time, and an envelope. If you have several of our products, please fill out a seperate questionaire for each one. You can send 3 or 4 (maybe more) back at one time to save on postage. If I do not receive a reasonable number of responses, I will assume you do not want quality software, at which point I will cease from distributing altogether; in effect, you the user, will be the loser. YOUR OPINION DOES COUNT! YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! DO IT NOW! Insight Software Development is a trademark of Insight Software Development, Lexington, North Carolina.
